So I’ve told you how much I dislike colouring books, but what do you do instead?  We don’t want to put children off with a blank page ~ some children just need that extra inspiration.

I’m not completely against colouring books per se.  Only the conformist attitude that they inspire.  So if you are willing to work with your junior genius to colour outside convention then go for it!

  • Color people in different patterns, give them some wacky clothes
  • Add dots or lines or swirls to animals
  • Give your subjects accessories like beards and moustaches, or hats, glasses, handbags etc.
  • Add some groovy scenery – trees, flowers, houses, cars, dragons being slain, aeroplanes…patterned filled fields…you get the idea!

But if like me you don’t have many colouring books in the house and you have ever been asked “What should I draw”…stay tuned for some tips and ideas in a coming post.

Oh….and while you’re at it, why don’t you take a leaf out of the colouring book and create an abstract masterpiece yourself using the pre-drawn image as a base?  It is great fun, very liberating, and sets an awesome example for your children.
