I remember attending a seminar about – oh – 20 years ago (yes I confess I am a serial learner…more in the future on that!) I can’t of course remember the exact event but it was about innovation in business. The presenter was telling a story about the development of the fax machine. The exact details are not relevant here – just the concept and I confess that the hour is late and I can’t be bothered to research them to get them exact – but the story went something like the fax machine being developed practically simultaneously in 2 countries on almost opposite sides of the world each without prior knowledge of the other….the concept being of “an idea whose time has come”.
This has stuck in my mind so many times as I am somewhat of an ideas person (no shit Sherlock I hear you exclaim…) but so often I have had a seemingly spontaneous idea only to research and find it already exists, or sat on an idea to see a launch of something soooooo similar months later.
The idea whose time has come.
Again recently I attended another conference (alright…don’t say it…) and the presenter there was chatting and sharing and sprouting and amongst all he said I heard 4 words that set off light bulbs…”The Company We Keep”. It was in the context of success and whatnot – but all kinds of neurons started firing together and wow…what a fabulous name for a business, a blog, a service, a mentorship group….a book…a…..
So break time, some research and what do I find? A marketing company named EXACTLY that right here in my home town of Melbourne! And you will never guess what…the founder was speaking at the very same conference the next day….serendipity or what!
And so I present my notes from the Creative Agencies section of the Analogue Digital Conference in Melbourne on 15/16 May. Speakers for this session were 2 very dynamic creatives from Breeder, Morton & Dan from Supervixen and Rhys from The Company You Keep.
Top takeaways:
- Design driven storytelling…with CLARITY…design should assist not detract from the story.
- You have unique opportunities because you are you…let that guide you.
- It’s never a waste of time if you learn something.
- Say it simply.
- Jump out of your comfort zone – in a calculated way!
