So you have heard of DNA right? The ‘deoxyribonucleic acid” that makes us who we are and gives us our ‘us-ness’.
Well I would like to introduce a new term…your CNA – your Creative Natural Aptitude. The key to your creative brain. Yes we all have one just that some of us have had difficulty allowing it to shine!
There are many different ways of being creative, and just as many definitions of creativity – however the one most common these days is that for something to be considered creative it has to meet certain criteria:
- Newness – for something to be creative it has to be original and new, the coming together of ideas and concepts that have not been conceived of before. Given that we all bring our own life experiences and thoughts to bear on any new topic – for the most part our solutions, creations, imaginings etc. are in some way new and original – tainted by our particular view of the world.
- Usefulness – they must serve some purpose. Of course artful creativity, it can be argued, often serves no ‘real’ purpose – however I challenge that most vociferously! The process of creating art is useful to the person creating as an outlet, a means of communication, of making sense of things, of an aesthetic appreciation. The process of viewing the art is useful to the viewer in that it sparks some kind of thought, feeling or emotion. It may provide mental stimulation or visual pleasure, as well as perhaps some functional use.
So your creativity is new and useful – and I advocate that we all embrace our own CNA and get busy.
Of course there is that age old argument about talent, and there is a difference between creativity and talent – talent relates to technical ability in a particular area such as in music, painting, drawing, cooking etc. Talent is indeed important, but there are many talented people who have not contributed to the world in a creative way.
So I argue that you must use your unique brain, be useful to yourself first and others second, and get it out into the world to spread your you-nique message!
Are you convinced yet?
